While others might be in a rush to compile themselves in their next work, Jason Fernandez has been playing the long-game: not succumbing to the crowd-rush of peers and friends around him releasing new material in soft community compliance, instead waiting for The Wind to pass him by, letting life happen, helping himself find the pace to run with it. Much like the little things like the sweat developing around your hairline during the tenser moments of a day, hazylazy’s debut album comes through as a vivid maximization of the little things that get to you: an almost-disgustingly personal audit, a raising of the noise floor of everyday quarter-life crises to fit the minus-one.
Yes, it is vulnerable, but this should be the case. If anything, it is truly remarkable to make something that cuts so deep while sounding as playful as it does. The thickly-laid analog sentimentality of his 2020 EP The Resentment Segment serves as a sonic jumping point for this album: a near-complete decentralization from guitar-music indie, a disregard of convention, and this impression that this house was built and not bought. Everything is laid brick by brick; no over-the-shoulder looks, paid in piecemeal with little bits of personal sanity. There’s a lot of life to live in five years, and you could hear the weight.
