Sophie Ogilvie, Chris Steward, and Markus Stahl have been playing music together with a rotating set of live performers since 2015. The band has gone through multiple iterations; after some attempts at a tongue-in-cheek disco pastiche, the trio spent years playing synth-pop at local shows and festivals in Montreal.
Approaching the writing and recording of their debut as Helen Paradise in 2019, it was clear that the group was interested in exploring new textures and embracing the increasingly brooding moods emerging in their collaborative songwriting. Demos were scrapped, lyrics were re-written from behind the microphone, and studio sessions were spaced months apart, before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shut-down of all things musical in Quebec. The resulting EP, "External World," draws on a range of influences including trip hop, prog rock, and avant-pop, each linked together by Ogilvie's rich vocal tone and the group’s ear for pop arrangements. For fans of Portishead, Stereolab, and Broadcast.
