Initially formed as the teenage project by sisters Annie and Georgie, Hockeysmith took form over the coming years, evolving from the sister's quivering love of Shoegaze and off kilter sounds, into a feast for the eyes and ears. ‘Let's Bang’, the debut single, and debut EP ‘But Blood’ generated attention for their brooding mix of electronic acid bass and post-punk noise. ‘But Blood’ was recorded under the management of Ed Horrox (Head of A&R at 4AD) and released through the excellent British indie label Double Denim Records.
The sisters converted a stable in Cornwall into a recording studio, which, by 2017, Annie returned to as the sole member of Hockeysmith. Drawing inspiration from Copenhagen's collaborative DIY ethos and the serene stillness of Cornwall, Hockeysmith unveiled the Tears at My Age EP in 2019.
Annie’s music has grown and transformed in recent years, culminating in the release of 'I Am For Life' in 2024. The songs reflect the heightened emotions of isolation and longing experienced as a single woman living in the French countryside during lockdown. At the end of 2021, Annie was reunited with the uber-talented producer Andy Smith (aka Lxury), who helped her finalise the album. Unified by a central lyrical theme, sonically it brims with variety, reflecting the diverse influences of multiple collaborators and producers. ‘Lowly Venom’ began as a melody originally crafted for Aphex Twin, whom Annie describes as “having become an adviser and friend”.
