Ida Mae are husband and wife duo Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean Ward. The scuzzy, frenetic rock of their debut Chasing Lights, produced by Ethan Johns (Laura Marling, Kings of Leon), received praise from The Independent and Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, their self-produced second album, 2021’s Click Click Domino, melded familiar country blues and folk tones with more synthetic sounds with guest appearances from Marcus King and Jake Kizska from Greta Van Fleet.
Turpin envisioned Thunder Above You as an album that lives and breathes. He was able to connect with some acquaintances in Norwich who own - "the most unbelievable mansion I’d ever seen" - in Turpin’s childhood hometown. They ended up recording there with close friends and collaborators including Johns and Nick Pini (Laura Marling, Nick Mulvey), ensconced among the mahogany panelling and warm acoustics, making use of all the vintage equipment they’d collected over the years.“I think with everything going on in the world, the sense of impending doom but also having a baby on the way, I wanted to write something that could be sung when I’m not around anymore."
