Danish saxophone player Jakob Elvstrøm loves and plays funky music whenever he can.
Jakob lives in smalltown Odder, close to Aarhus, the 2nd largest city in Denmark. He holds a bachelor's degree in Music Science and a degree in saxophone from the Music Conservatory in Aarhus.
In 1984 Jakob got a cassette tape copy of David Sanborn's album <a href="spotify:album:2rrojQJlIgvBA2FMcBY8Wl" data-name="Hideaway">Hideaway</a> and loved it. You can probably hear it when you listen to his albums <a href="spotify:album:3qdG5j2jxsXXpnY3cdWvnN" data-name="Saxclub Vol. 1">Saxclub Vol. 1</a> (with former Prince bass player <a href="spotify:artist:0LNUSuufEzNpI4nPIVThW3" data-name="Ida Nielsen">Ida Nielsen</a> ) and <a href="spotify:album:2xT1PqlS4GAovPyF2kvOp6" data-name="Saxclub, Vol. 2">Saxclub, Vol. 2</a>.
The same happened when he bought the <a href="spotify:album:3IF7aLh7zOgYSXpGMbW3Dv" data-name="Pretty Things">Pretty Things</a> album by alto sax player <a href="spotify:artist:1z3BNUSDJB5V6sCYKJWH4q" data-name="Lou Donaldson">Lou Donaldson</a> (he is, by the way, a guest artist on Jakobs album <a href="spotify:album:3xVQK5fL3ihXDEXl4WApIM" data-name="Play It Back">Play It Back</a>).
You can hear Jakob Elvstrøm's early work in the <a href="spotify:artist:5JUMF2CFJddblN9FUx59XH" data-name="Jakob Elvstrøm Quartet">Jakob Elvstrøm Quartet</a>, which was part of the acid-jazz movement in the late 90ies. The band made two albums; <a href="spotify:album:0uGgm59Ck3L9PtwU9yqLLf" data-name="Live at Copenhagen Jazzhouse">Live at Copenhagen Jazzhouse</a> and <a href="spotify:album:4ZTlRPfy8qxiS9zII4VYDC" data-name="The Party Ain't over Yet">The Party Ain't over Yet</a>.
The funky music from the JEQ is continued with many excellent guest musicians and singers on the "Funky Sessions" albums <a href="spotify:album:3xVQK5fL3ihXDEXl4WApIM" data-name="Play It Back">Play It Back</a> and ElectrOrleans.
Between all the funky music Jakob has found the time to make something a little more introverted - <a href="spotify:album:1RFGPOXAKBfj0cOxyXPSEZ" data-name="Silent Sax">Silent Sax</a>. With saxophone, sparse instrumentation, and found sounds.
Lately, Jakob Elvstrøms has set his mind on making his own version of the four seasons with his "Die vier Jahreszeiten" project. A funky version of Summertime and a spoken voice version of Autumn Leaves has been released, soon to be followed by winter and spring.
