The Javasounds Indonesian Music Series provides a survey of the enchanting music of Java, featuring some of the island's musical legends. Produced by Kai Riedl and recorded by Kai Riedl and Suny Lyons across the island of Java. Please visit www.javasounds.org for detailed performer credits and much more.
Over multiple trips In the later 2000s Riedl and Lyons captured everything from children’s songs and solo string players to full 30-member gamelan orchestras found all over the island. They recorded everywhere from darkly-lit nightclubs in bustling cities to bamboo huts way, way off the grid. Their love of soundwaves (and a little luck) had them tracking everyone, from the country’s beloved stars to virtually unknown street musicians and everyone in between. All these albums have been finally released in 2024.
Background: After a solo recording trip in 2001, Riedl returned with Lyons in the later 2000s to undertake what eventually
became Javasounds. All the best of all these performances have been compiled into 12 definitive albums of unparalleled recording quality. Each record in the Javasounds series introduces one of many musical genres found on the island of Java, sometimes highlighting legendary musicians, and in other cases, showcasing the range of a single style across multiple regions. Gongs, zithers, hand drums, drum machines, reverb drenched vocals and so much more make up the ocean of music here, giving any listener a renewed sense of musical wonder.
