Jean-Philippe Guy is a French jazz singer based in Madrid. A seamless blend of jazz, blues and folk, his very personal sound is at times reminiscent of Cassandra Wilson or Sting. His debut album “I’m beginning to see the light” (Fluxx Records) was recorded in Munich in 2005 alongside acclaimed pianist Ju Cassou, Gilson de Assis, and Ciro Trindade. In 2012, he teamed up with award winning jazz guitarist Lori Lorenzen (EMI) on a critically-acclaimed set of duets entitled “Like a wheel within a wheel” comprising, among other gems, Duke Ellington’s “I Ain’t Got Nothing But The Blues,” Kurt Weill’s “September Song,” Stevie Wonder’s “If It’s Magic,” or Joni Mitchell’s “Down To You". Here are excerpts of Scott Yanow's (the author of a dozen celebrated books on Jazz) review for The Los Angeles Jazz Times:
"Both Guy and Lorenzen are flexible and fluent improvisers (...) Guy is a subtle but expressive singer who makes each note count while Lorenzen proves to be a one-man orchestra without overdubbing. Their musical communication is so instant that many times they sound like a singer-guitarist rather than two different musicians.
This fine release is well worth checking out";
His latest album was recorded in Madrid alongside guitarist Rayko Pepelanov and bass player Alejandro Masafret, and includes 8 standards adapted or translated into French by Guy himself.
He is regularly invited to perform in the best jazz clubs and festivals in both France and Spain.
