Jeremiah Fraites is a musician, composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of The Lumineers.
Born and raised in Ramsey, NJ, he demonstrated an early passion for music. His mother recalls that even at the age of 4, Jeremiah played the piano keys delicately and with care. Beethoven was an early influence before he started listening to Guns N’ Roses and Pink Floyd, who his older brother Joshua introduced him to.
Tragically, when Jeremiah was 15, Joshua died of a heroin overdose. Deeply affected by the loss of his brother, Jeremiah turned to music as the treatment for his pain. The tragedy would fuel his creativity and skill as a musician. While in college, Jeremiah’s love for music deepened. He structured his classes to maximize his time practicing in the university’s practice piano rooms. While Jeremiah took a few music lessons, he’s almost entirely self-taught on piano, drums and guitar.
Jeremiah wrote and performed the piano instrumentals on “Patience” and “For Fra” from The Lumineers’ Cleopatra, as well as “April” from their latest album, III. These works sparked his interest in writing more songs for the piano, leading to the 2019 song, “11 Shapes.”
Jeremiah’s interest in music spans a wide array of genres and cultural influences. Early in his career, his diverse interests caused him frustration when trying to determine his sound. As years have passed, he now sees it as a gift to be able to take his musical tastes and combine them in a unique way.
