jjuujjuu started as a rotating ensemble of international collaborators, wrangled by Los Angeles musician, Phil Pirrone.
In 2011, Pirrone borrowed an SG and a DL4, and began his exploration of recording looped based music. He later brought song ideas to life with the rhythmic accompaniment of friend and then collaborator, Andrew Clinco (aka <a href="spotify:artist:2CSEKlTT9empsZ8vZWsrKO" data-name="Drab Majesty">Drab Majesty</a> mastermind Deb Demure). jjuujjuu’s debut release, 2013's FRST EP began to build excitement about the project. jjuujjuu continued to tour in several different configurations, sharing stages with Tortoise, Temples, Tinariwen, Les Claypool, and others.
Over the next few years, Pirrone recorded in various spaces around California to document the songs that would make up jjuujjuu’s debut LP, Zionic Mud. The album's release on Dine Alone was accompanied by alternate versions of the tracks remixed or reimagined by <a href="spotify:artist:1PokjXeIq2zVosXbTEaNlx" data-name="J Mascis">J Mascis</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0YJbZA7Ci73cEk1Ylcukgt" data-name="jennylee">jennylee</a> of <a href="spotify:artist:3AmgGrYHXqgbmZ2yKoIVzO" data-name="Warpaint">Warpaint</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2z78AlkdwE2Ghj9EB50M6z" data-name="Liars">Liars</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:18TNVFTJ6WfeicsMRrdJHI" data-name="Metz">Metz</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:7HizNYe1mSfmvbXlx3la3m" data-name="Autolux">Autolux</a>. During this era, the band supported Primus, Mastodon, Kikagaku Moyo, Earthless, and appeared at festivals Pickathon, Levitation, Hipnosis, Wide Awake, Desert Daze + more.
jjuujjuu started rolling out standalone singles in 2021, and has since released 8 of those. 2024 was the busiest touring year on record for the band, with longtime touring lineup Phil Pirrone, Ian Gibbs, Joseph Assef, Eric Werner, and Nicole Verhamme hitting Coachella, Primavera Sound, Green Man, Electric Forest, and a KEXP session. A new album is in the works and expected by 2026.
