The son of the famous copla singers Juanito Valderrama and Dolores Abril, Juan Antonio Valderrama (aka Valderrama) was born in 1972 and spent his childhood in Madrid and Seville. He studied journalism at the University of Navarra and begun working at a local television channel, when a demo he recorded, followed by a TV appearance, prompted the interest of many recording labels attracted to both his undeniable talents as well as his family clout. His first album, La Memoria del Agua (2002) featured collaborations by stars such as Ana Belén, Joaquín Sabina, Vicente Amigo, and his own father, and became an instant critical and popular success. Valderrama kept on making flamenco pop albums, but also pursued his many other interests, launching an acting career, his own recording and publishing label, and occasionally, journalism. Further musical productions have found Valderrama outgrowing his pop beginnings in favor of Arab music (Moderna Tradición, 2009) and traditional flamenco (Sonidos Blancos, 2011.) ~ Mariano Prunes
