Award-winning saxophonist Julian Argüelles plays a unique mix of exciting contemporary jazz infused with Spanish rhythms, South African grooves and classical nuance. From his beginnings in the 1980s with the legendary UK big band Loose Tubes, Argüelles has always spoken with a unique voice.
An exceptionally gifted musician, he’s been compared to sax legends Wayne Shorter and Charles Lloyd (Jazzwise), while his on-stage chemistry with Julian Argüelles Quartet has been likened to Keith Jarrett’s renowned 1970s European quartet
Most recent CDs include: Tonadas with his quartet (Ivo Neame piano, Sam Lasserson Bass, James Maddren drums), Setembro LAN Trio (Mario Laginha piano, Portugal & Helge Norbakken percussion, Norway), The Behemoth with Phronesis & HR Frankfurt (all on Edition Records), “Tetra” with the quartet feat Kit Downes piano (Whirwind Records), Let it be Told (Basho Records 2015) won Best CD 2016 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. “Circularity” (CamJazz label) with Dave Holland bass, the late John Taylor piano, Martin France drums.
His “12 Etudes for the Modern Saxophonist” is published by Astute Music. Available via website.
