The layers of KOLAJ’s sound is the cross cultural backdrop behind her catchy anthemic songwriting. Teesa Houston’s “collage” derives from her multi-cultural background - being of Filipino decent, adopted from Japan as an infant by a military family, and raised in an African American home of which she moved frequently on and off military base-housing throughout her upbringing including Japan, Hawaii, Ohio, and South Dakota. Even more complex to her artistry is the tie in of her origin story of being rescued as an infant from a crime syndicate. Uncertain if she would only be a songwriter for other artists, Houston began KOLAJ in efforts to diversify the pop industry and have a voice to tell her story. After releasing several light hearted singles under Universal Music like “The Touch” and “Hitchhike”, she has gone on to deliver successful collaborations including “100 Degrees” with QuinnXCII, “Into You” with Kpop’s Eric Nam, and “Whatever” as a single on Kaskade’s album, Automatic.
