Headed by accordionist/vocalist Joan Garriga, La Troba Kung-Fú carries on the tradition of mixing, revamping, and experimenting with Catalan rhumba. After eight fruitful years and three critically acclaimed records with the renown band Dusminguet, Garriga chose to branch off and head his own group starting in 2005. The group's members -- Pep Terricabres (drums), Flor Inza (percussion), Muñeco (piano/voz), Mariá Roch (bass), Muchacho, Toti Arimany, and Marc Sampere -- bring together elements of dub, cumbia, blues, boogie woogie, and more. Their name pays homage to both los travadores (traveling minstrels) of a bygone era and the kung fu-like mastery of their instruments. Some months after their inception, La Troba Kung-Fú released their debut EP, Dub-Filleti. Published on the Internet, the recording featured a handful of compositions and their respective remixes. The band's full-length album debut was released a short time later. The record, entitled Clavell Morenet, was recorded in Spain and London and released by the K Industria label. The project was warmly received, gracing European world music charts for months after its release. Though not well covered outside Spain, La Troba's emerging popularity was aided by numerous appearances on regional television throughout the summer and fall of 2007. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi
