Lake is a German-British band that enjoyed major success in Europe and the United States between 1976 and 1979. The original line-up consisted of Alex Conti (guitar), Martin Tiefensee (bass), Detlef Petersen (piano and keyboards), Geoffrey Peacey (organ and keyboards), Dieter Ahrend (drums) and James Hopkins-Harrison (vocals).
With the support of music publisher Gerd Müller (Francis, Day & Hunter), the band recorded their debut album at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, produced by Petersen, who also wrote most of the music, while Hopkins-Harrison provided the lyrics. Released by CBS in 1976 under the title Lake, the album reached the top of the charts in several countries and earned the German Record Prize in 1977. Known for polyphonic choruses, powerful guitar riffs and melodic ballads, Lake toured extensively across Europe and the US, supporting artists such as Wishbone Ash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robin Trower, Hall & Oates and Neil Young, and later headlining major shows. Festival appearances included performances alongside Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Chicago, Genesis and Santana.
Albums such as Paradise Island (1979) and songs like “Time Bomb” and “On the Run” achieved international hit status. After disbanding in 1979, members Detlef Petersen, Martin Tiefensee, Alex Conti and Geoffrey Peacey, together with former member Ian Cussick, reunited to work on a new album scheduled for release in 2026. New lead singer Rob Reynolds can already be heard on the current single “Boy on a Mission”
