If Liam Benzvi’s first album, 2022’s Acts of Service, is the sound of a man refereeing his conflicting passions or coming to terms with the creeping normalcy of those many small indignities that dash our best attempts to keep love alive, then his second ...And His Splash Band, is the sound of someone seeing what he can get away with. On his breakout release on Fat Possum, Benzvi is apologizing less and playing more. This time he’s hungry for the tension he once fretted over. In fact, he’s insatiable!
Friends-turned-collaborators join Benzvi on …And His Splash Band, including Ren G of Club Eat, Lecx Stacy, SSION, Aaron Maine of Porches, and Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange. Producer Nightfeelings takes the lead on production duties, having recorded the majority of the record with Benzvi in his studio situated above a sex shop on Santa Monica Boulevard. The result is a collection of eleven wide-ranging songs that seem to run together in a pack—just like the smoldering disciples that now comprise Benzvi’s backing band. “Silas brings the brains,” says Benzvi, “Dalgo brings the body. Jet brings the Balkans and the brawn.”
While this may be their first major release as four boys with a blood pact between them, Benzvi insists that his Splash Band is “back.” It’s unclear when or how it happened, but the boys all fell under Benzvi’s sway. “They’re just like me,” he says, “and I can smell a free meal from a mile away.”
...And His Splash Band arrives September 27th on Fat Possum.
