Originally formed in 1997 by Lisa Hall, Nip (Stuart) Heeley, Paul Hopkinson and Steve Ludlam, we were signed to Reprise Records in Los Angeles .. despite being based in Chesterfield UK (just south of Sheffield for the non-geographically minded).
Combining a trip-hop vibe with a pop sensibility, the title track of our record Is This Real? was picked up for use in Warner Bros' Practical Magic, the witchcraft-themed Nicole Kidman/Sandra Bullock film.
It also featured in Baywatch and more recently in Our Girl, the BBC One drama.
During the following years we sent smoke signals and song ideas to each other until magnetic influence won out and pulled us together in 2021 to complete and record a batch of new songs, this time minus Paul Hopkinson who decided to plough a more organic musical furrow. Our best wishes go with him.
The first of these new songs to be released, Isn't Life Beautiful? was written about the uncertain times we're living through and is an uncomplicated, optimistic and uplifting reminder that things are not so bad; a simple paean to the beauty of life despite its vicissitudes, echoing this quotation from Max Ehrmann's Desiderata written in the 1920s and still relevant today,
"With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."
All will be well.
