life moves slowly
when you’re in the sun
and death moves slowly too
worming its way through your pores
and under the skin
till you fade away softly
somewhere on a warm lonely beach
but in the city
we’re all racing
toward our graves.
we’re swept up
just like ashes from the asphalt,
never having sung our song.
and such a short chorus it is
that decays in us,
such beautiful harmonies
never being heard
that wail faintly,
like quick melodies in a cathedral hall,
magnificent for a moment
and then
silent.
