Louisiana's native singer-songwriter, Mother Marygold, credits the dark tones of New Orleans jazz culture for the sound that changed the landscape of underground music. For her, it was the culture that spoke, helping her cultivate a sound that was unfamiliar but relative.
In 2013 Mother Marygold released Prayer, a single that caught the likes of recording artist Drake and established her relationship with Curren$y and Jetlife Recordings. That same year, Marygold released Sex, Hormone'd, Druggie. The mixtape was a mesmerizing mix of deep tones and raspy vocals over trap instrumentation, landing her a spot in Drake's Worst Behavior Video. With her different approach to music, Mother Marygold paved the way for artists in New Orleans to make a new noise.
In 2017, Vice Magazine did an article on the current music scene in New Orleans, mentioning Mother Marygold's contribution to the new sound coming from the city:
"A moderately weird black girl who challenged the gaudy expectations of a rapping woman, Gold was also the sign of a new guard in the city's music scene, in tune with that moment's Tumblr-informed rap aesthetics."
In the same year, Mother Marygold was also featured on IDK's Dog Love Kitty produced by Kal Banx. In 2019, Mother Marygold was featured on Husky Loops', I Can't Even Speak English, with Mother Marygold as the only feature on the awaited album.
Mother Marygold is now working on MM1, a self-titled EP exclusively produced by Sabbath.Wav.
