Pronounced 'animal style,' nmlstyl is Joey Mariano's audio-visual project. Joey's chip music career started around the Y2K era when Napster was huge. She used a MySpace friend adder to advertise her early chiptune music, which was coined as 'fakebit' by demoscene purists. Her first recordings were released on CDR in 2001, and later her first live show as 'animal style' was at Pulsewave in 2005 with NYC's 8bit Peoples crew. After this, she gained notoriety on YouTube and in hackerspaces for her 'Gameboy Foot Controller' modification YouTube video, featuring FXDoctor's 8bit fuzz pedal. The next logical step was to release music on actual game cartridges, so she worked with NO CARRIER and developed some of the first 'album carts' for the NES. In the following years, she spent a decade organizing 8static events, developing a visual style, playing MAGfest with Cheap Dinosaurs, and leading the Philadelphia chip scene through crowdfunding and DIY aesthetics. Following the success of NY's 2008 Blip Festival, she helped Philly grow a vivid scene. 8static finally ended with 3 festivals, one of which took place at the famed Unitarian Church in Philly. After 2017, she branched off into synthwave/vaporwave and is a well-known Philadelphia graffiti artist. Her current live band is composed of Yusef Killiebrew on drums and Rob Martino on additional synths. The upcoming nmlstyl album will be a double: live band side and an electronic side. ♫ ♫
