The main creative focus of Oliver Dickson, Oils is an electronic ambient project with experimental ideals and filmic sensibilities. Playing piano from an early age, formative years were spent pouring over endless rock records from 60's through to the 2000's. It wasn’t until after playing/writing for a decade in various guitar bands that he decided to make electronic music his main focus. Stumbling across Boards of Canada and Black Moth Super Rainbow on a Youtube music binge, perhaps in 2013, coupled with a serious love of the Blade Runner Soundtrack, would provide the necessary keys to his newfound passion.
His Debut album “Between Voids” (2020) had a fantasy ambient soundtrack aesthetic and explored naivety with intention bringing influence from John Carpenter, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Francis Bebey and Philip Glass among others.
“Noodles” EP (2021) took on a deceptively more complex, more nuanced approach to sound design and maximalist approach to instrumentation, while still retaining the lo-fi aesthetics and playful feel of the debut.
In the last year and a half Oils has been putting together his second album. The record finds him consolidating and building on the sound of his first two releases and also continues Oils visual collaborations, this time with digital artist Damon Kearns. In his work Damon uses generative environmental building tools to create immense, abstract and otherworldly vistas. Earthly Vistas is due to be released 1st June 2023.
