Sharp-tongued battle rapper Michael “Eyedea” Larsen became a well-known force in the hip-hop circuit. After winning three of the most notable MC battles at the turn of the millennium – Scribble Jam (1999), Rocksteady MC Battle (2000) and the nationally televised HBO Blaze Battle (2000) – Larsen and his childhood friend Gregory “DJ Abilities” Keltgen released a trio of poignantly introspective and innovative records together as Eyedea and Abilities, and establishing the duo as a progressive and integral part of the underground hip-hop sound of the era. Eyedea also released a self-produced solo project under the name Oliver Hart, as well as a live project with his improvisational rap/jazz group Face Candy, and two projects with an alternative rock group, Carbon Carousel. Unfortunately, Eyedea’s career was cut tragically short when he passed away at the age of 28 in October of 2010, but his legacy lives on.
