Ethan Ayaay, who records under the stage name Pluto Koi, is a Bay Area-based singer-songwriter who is a self-confessed hopeless romantic.
Following a move to California from the Philippines, Pluto began experimenting with music in high school, pulling inspiration from the lyrics of Ed Sheeran and the heartache of first love. Pluto found success fast with his first EP “Destination: Planet Koi'' in 2019. Bolstered by the single “You’re Not Lonely”, Pluto quickly gained a total of over 2 million streams from listeners who likely gravitated towards the singer’s relatable, compassionate lyrics.
Since his debut, Pluto has released a second EP, titled “HOPE THIS HELPS” and a handful of singles, all of which focus on the topic of love and self-acceptance. His stage name, created from a fascination with an outcast planet and koi fish, also references the alienation that Pluto felt growing up. He hopes his listeners can find solace through these themes in his music. “I want to convey my relatability the most,” he said in an interview in 2023. “I want people to find comfort in my music. I hope that they see themselves in it.”
