Pretz was the one off moniker of @neilcowley, released just before the debut of his @neilcowleytrio project in 2005. Recorded solely in an abandoned house, situated deep in the countryside and belonging to a late aunt, Cowley was inspired by the remnants of this ladies life that surrounded him, including old 78” records that remained unclaimed on the shelves. Many mornings were spent clearing up the debris of overnight animal incursions in order to start work. Surrounded by the ghosts of a life in this solitary house, Cowley recalls a feeling of unease throughout the process. That ‘looking over the shoulder’ feeling. And though it was a productive time, it’s completion was most welcome!
