Romano Musumarra (born 1956 in Rome, Italy) is an Italian composer, songwriter, and record producer. He studied piano, composition, and conducting at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. In 1975, he formed the melodic pop-rock group La Bottega dell'Arte, with whom he achieved considerable success throughout the 1970s. In addition to his work with the band, he recorded an electronic album in 1978, titled Automat, together with Claudio Gizzi. Musumarra became known for his contributions to European pop music from the 1980s onward. He first gained recognition by writing and producing for artists such as Jeanne Mas, Elsa Lunghini, Linda William’s, Demis Roussos, Céline Dion, Ray Charles, and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, scoring major chart hits in France and other European countries. He was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters), a prestigious French award that recognizes significant contributions to the arts and culture, both in France and internationally. The award was presented to him by the French Minister of Culture in recognition of his work as a composer and producer. Beyond pop, Musumarra has composed film scores for various movies, including Maladie d’Amour (1987), L’Enfance de l’art (1988), Day of Atonement (1992), The Teddy Bear (1994), and La Réparation (2025). He is also well known for his collaboration with tenor Alessandro Safina, blending classical and contemporary styles.
