Ruben Ramos, known as El Gato Negro, is a legendary Tejano singer from Sugar Land, Texas, and one of the genre’s most influential voices. Coming from a family of musicians dating back to the 1910s, Ramos began performing in the late 1960s and quickly developed a distinctive sound rooted in Tejano, mariachi, R&B, and Chicano culture.
In 1969, he formed his band The Mexican Revolution, inspired by the Chicano civil rights movement. Over the decades, Ramos became a defining figure in Tejano music, earning induction into the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame and later winning Best Male Vocalist (1999). His band also earned a Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2009.
