Ruut is a Finnish-born, Baltimore-based musician and multidisciplinary artist with over 20 years of experience as a songwriter, performer, and creative guide.
Known early in her career as “Baltimore’s piano girl,” she has released nine independent albums and shared stages with Brett Dennen, Trevor Hall, and Passenger. Her songs appear in TV and award-winning films, including Soliloquy and It Happened Here.
Born in Finland and raised across continents, Ruut began composing music in childhood while traveling through Eastern Europe with her missionary mother. Though descended from a renowned musical lineage—her grandfather, Aulis Sallinen, is Finland’s most celebrated living opera composer—she is largely self-taught.
She’s currently writing a novel inspired by The Kalevala, reimagining its mythic archetypes through a contemporary, feminist lens. The book is part of her broader inquiry into voice, embodiment, and origin.
Ruut holds an MFA from Antioch University and has worked as an educator, university lecturer, and mentor to women artists navigating creative block, trauma, and transformation. She leads the Baltimore chapter of a national Finnish cultural organization and recently founded Making Her Mark, a nonprofit uplifting women artists facing barriers.
Her upcoming album, The Motherland (October 2025), is a collaborative, immersive exploration of belonging, ancestry, and the body as homeland.
