Sam Hankins
Sam Hankins is a powerhouse American jazz trumpeter whose bold sound, genre-spanning creativity, and inspiring journey have earned him over 40 independent music awards and a reputation as one of the most versatile and expressive horn players in contemporary jazz.
Raised in a musical household in Oklahoma City, Sam’s earliest influence came from his father, Sam Hankins, Sr., lead singer of the regional group The Ho-Dads. Sam earn a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from Northeastern State University, followed by military service as a trumpeter in the U.S. Air Force Jazz Band, 505th. Sam attended the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he earned a second Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, followed by his Masters in Music Education.
Sam has performed with Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau, Clark Terry, The O’Jays, The Temptations, The Dells, The Glenn Miller Big Band, and most recently, the iconic Barbara Morrison before her passing in 2022.
Sam’s recording career spans five studio albums: Dream Catcher (2011), Nothing Between Us (2012), Joyous Celebration (2015, with David McLorren), Do That Thang (2016). His latest release Alright (2023), earned 14 Indie Music Channel Awards and is his most diverse project to date. His new single “Here We Go” May release (2025).
Now based in Los Angeles, Sam leads his own ensemble, the Sam Hankins Project,
