Sam Johnson is a songwriter who wants to build a legacy. Each song that bears his name means something – hewn from emotional conduits in his own life, this is an artist who seeks to communicate badly needed truth, and it’s something that leaves an incredible impact.
The forthcoming EP ‘Are We There Yet?’ is the next step of his journey. Following on from 2019 debut EP ‘Eastcote’, it combines the emotional weight of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell with the eagerness to communicate of Ben Howard, it’s a coming of age in every sense. Reflective, nostalgic songwriting, it carries a world-weary beauty far beyond his tender years. “There’s been a lot of nostalgia,” he comments, “looking back on my childhood... and missing it a lot, really. I’ve always been quite a reflective person. An old head on young shoulders, maybe.”
“I create characters influenced by what I see around me,” he says. “A lot of the lyrics are touchstones of my childhood, and where I grew up... and the people that I grew up around.”
