Samar Mehdi is a music composer, producer and performing artist, specialising in 'percussive fingerstyle' songwriting. He describes his approach towards music using Stephen Sondheim's famous words, "Content dictates form"; and showcases it through the wide range of cross-genre elements in most of his music as well as the difference in the themes and arrangements of all of his songs and soundtracks. His work incorporates elements from various Indian folk music bases as well as Indian semi-classical and pop music all the way to progressive rock and metal.
Alongside his creative work, Samar is a multi-instrumentalist and singer and brings all of his learnings together in the form of percussive fingerstyle songwriting, wherein he writes and performs as a "one-man band". In 2018, he released his first EP 'Urooj', which focussed on themes of existentialism, while his second EP, 'Guruub' (2019) talked about the mind's tendency to blur reality in the midst of turmoil. Since then, he has released a few singles, including 'Sukoon' (2021), which is his most streamed song till date across all platforms.
Having done three tours since July 2023, including his first UK tour, Samar shifted his focus on his creative work and is currently working on his first full-length album, with which he intends to showcase his music composing and production abilities beyond percussive fingerstyle.
