Laura Scarlett and David Disher began recording dreamy, synth-tinged pop songs in 2012 with their 1960’s covers EP “Dream”. Inspired by dream pop bands such as Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, they crafted a lush atmosphere, melding Disher’s electronic production with Scarlett’s heartbreaking vocals. They continued to collaborate annually, releasing the Depeche Mode covers EP “Halo” in 2013. Conceived as an homage to the 80’s synth-pop legends’ pioneering use of sampling technology, “Halo” was recorded using sampled household objects such as pots, glasses, cupboards and an elastic band instead of musical instruments. That same year, they recorded the 6-track homage to Canadian children’s shows of the 1980’s with “Saturday Morning On Friday Night”, which featured arrangements centred heavily around synths and drum machines.
In 2014, Scarlett & Disher began their foray into Christmas music with the wall of sound EP “That Christmas Feeling”. Inspired by Phil Spector’s Christmas productions from the 60’s, the EP combines orchestral samples with rock band instruments and heavily reverberated vocals from Laura Scarlett. Their follow-up, 2015’s “December Nights” stripped away the orchestration in favour of electric pianos, mellotrons, and a more subdued psychedelic production. In 2016, they took a more playful approach to the same instruments, while supplementing them with bizarre synthesizers and heavily layered vocal arrangements to craft the chaotic and lush EP “This Year’s End”.
