Setec is the solo project of Sydney-based multi-hyphenate musician Joshua Gibbs. The textures in his work are equally influenced by the vulnerable lyricism and melodic complexity of Joni Mitchell as the cut-n-paste aesthetic of The Books, melding organic and electronic elements to create expansive and delicate sonic worlds.
Setec’s debut LP, 2014's Brittle as Bones was preceded by 2012’s buzz-building EP ‘I’ll Be Good’.
In 2017 Setec released two singles Loose Leaves and Cotton Bones leading up to the release of his second album ‘Atrial Flutters (Or Raise Yr Hand If Yr Afraid)’ which Josh describes as “something that truly feels like an extension of myself; good and bad, neuroses and joy, anxiety and depression. Going into it I knew exactly the textural palette I would be working with: lots of loose, wavy strings and rumbling basses. Samples less intricately placed and more hammered into order. The feeling of taking water off the heat just before it boils over.”
Setec has talked openly about his struggles with anxiety and depression, which Atrial Flutters is both in spite of and indebted to. "The biggest blessing from this record has been the dialogue I've been able to open with fans talking about their own struggles. Mental health is still widely stigmatized (not to mention romanticized) and communicating with my listeners after working on this album has truly been a privilege. It's too easy to forget that there's always hope."
