Born in London to Jamaican parents, Shirley Davis possesses a unique voice that has firmly anchored her on the modern funk and soul map.
Davis began her career in Melbourne, Australia, where she quickly became the lead singer of Grand Wazoo - Australia’s premier retro soul and funk outfit. This led her to become the go-to backing vocalist for soul royalty such as Wilson Pickett, Betty Harris and especially Marva Whitney, who became a close friend and mentor, when they toured Australia, as well as contemporary funk bands such as Osaka Monaurail. Yet the defining influence in her career was Sharon Jones, who became a good friend for over a decade and gave her decisive encouragement.
After relocating to Europe, Davis was spotted by Madrid-based Tucxone Records’ label managers performing with Sharon Jones, who pulled her onto the Madrid stage to sing with her as a surprise to the audience. The Silverbacks connection was instant, they recorded their widely acclaimed debut album “Black Rose” in early 2016.
Davis’ superb voice, warm and yet with grit, at times with a delicious nervous tremble, allows her to convey deep emotion into every song. Their sophomore album “Wishes and Wants” ( Tucxone Records, 2018) keeps the torch of funk and soul burning bright, taking it up yet another notch.
"Keep on keepin' on" (2022). their 3rd album sealed the deal.
Pure funk and soul.
Shirley formed a new project
