Southbank began as Jeff Neely's secret songwriting hobby, a creative escape for a design executive who moonlit as the Old 97's social media and web guru. The COVID years turned that dabbling into a full-blown dive, with encouragement (and a little help) from friends like John Dufilho of the Deathray Davies, who hopped on drums and mixed Jeff's debut album, Touching the Stove. Their collaboration was just the beginning.
After hitting a songwriting retreat and realizing he was the only one *not* in a band, Jeff took advantage of the rich music scene in Austin to pull together a 5-piece band. With the full lineup, Southbank's sound has evolved beyond its Americana roots, embracing a strong indie rock current. Expect jangly guitars, catchy melodies, and lyrics that bounce from the quirky corners of suburban life and corporate servitude to the messy truths of relationships. Think the raw charm of early Wilco, mixed with the clever pop sensibilities of Fountains of Wayne, and a dash of The Hold Steady's narrative punch. You can also hear echoes of their mentors, Old 97's, woven throughout.
One author friend nailed it as "Catchy geek punk country rock pop," while another suggested "Southwest emo." Whatever you call it, if you're into smart, fun, and slightly unkempt rock and roll, Southbank's your new favorite band.
