New York City's Suffrajett is lo-fi, aggressive, and grooving, but they aren't quite garage rock. The band plays swaggering tunes that are both grimy and soulful, led by the sweet and raw vocals of Simi. Simi, a classically trained singer from Woodstock, NY, and Chicagoan guitarist Jason Chasko, who played with Liz Phair on Whitechocolatespaceegg, formed Suffrajett in 2002. With Kevin Roberts (Elysian Fields) on bass and Frank Ferrer (the Psychedelic Furs) on drums, the band brings a touch of glam to their nasty rock strut. Suffrajett's self-titled debut, a raucous selection of Lower East Side grit with some catchy hooks, was released on In Music We Trust in May of 2003. ~ Charles Spano, Rovi
