Sywel Nyw

Sywel Nyw is the alias of Welsh composer, producer, and DJ Lewys Wyn. His debut album Deuddeg earned him the Welsh Language Album of the Year Award in 2022 — a bold collaborative project featuring twelve artists across twelve distinct tracks.

Now based in London, Sywel Nyw steps into a new phase with his 2025 album release, trading in his signature alt-pop guitars for a more immersive electronic sound. Drawing on skittering rhythms, warped samples, and layered textures, his new work signals a confident move towards the dancefloor.

Hapusrwydd Yw Bywyd pushes further into this space, blending house, disco, and club influences with spoken word and vocal features from across Wales. The album brings together a vibrant cast of collaborators, including vocalists Mared and Malan, and poets Megan Hunter and Carwyn Eckley, whose contributions add emotional depth and lyrical texture to the record’s pulsing, euphoric soundscape. Self-recorded and mixed, it’s a celebration of joy and presence — summed up in the album’s opening sample, where the Reverend Guto Llewelyn, quoting Dostoevsky, reminds us: "Life is a gift, life is happiness, every minute can be an eternity of happiness."
