T. Nautilus is the indie folk/rock project of singer-songwriter Ian T.D. Thomson. After a six-year hiatus, “In the Limited Time” is the third in the Nautilus trilogy of albums (2015’s “<a href="spotify:album:7LOl252YJ4H0caeQiakZmB" data-name="T. The name-sake, Nautilus, is a type of mollusc found in the warm Indo-Pacific oceans on deep slopes of coral reefs. Ian, on the other hand, hails from diametrically opposite environments: the brisk and wintery prairies of Manitoba, and in recent years high up the escarpment of concrete Toronto.
Just as varied as these environments, “In the Limited Time” takes inspiration from far-ranging sources: the volatility of the moods of Lake Winnipeg; the solitude amongst the crowds of the Toronto subway; the pith and substance of higher education; the challenges of a world in turmoil over the past few years; joy from simple pleasures; and friendship and connection. These themes are all reflected in the songs and soundscapes created in this latest offering. The outcome is music which calls to mind the nylon-acoustic percussion of José González; the country twang of Jim Ed Brown; and the wholesome delicacy of Sufjan Stevens.
