The Eight Minutes

Hedda, David, and Wendell Sudduth, along with Ricky, Hank, and Ronald Goggins, received their soul training on Chicago’s far South Side. Juwanna Glover and Carl Monroe completed the pre-pubescent octet, after which veteran producer Jim Porter released a string of Eight Minutes singles on his Jay Pee label. On “Take My Love Don’t Set Me Free,” released on Jay Pee in 1972, a rumbling organ holds up the bottom end as the kids soar through falsetto harmonies. The Minutes get funky on the flip, with jaunty horns and a dirty beat.
