Hedda, David, and Wendell Sudduth, along with Ricky, Hank, and Ronald Goggins, received their soul training on Chicago’s far South Side. Juwanna Glover and Carl Monroe completed the pre-pubescent octet, after which veteran producer Jim Porter released a string of Eight Minutes singles on his Jay Pee label. On “Take My Love Don’t Set Me Free,” released on Jay Pee in 1972, a rumbling organ holds up the bottom end as the kids soar through falsetto harmonies. The Minutes get funky on the flip, with jaunty horns and a dirty beat.
