Thumb formed in Perth, Western Australia in 1994. Charles Chase (drums), Brendan Ewing (bass and vocals) and Andrew Ewing (guitar and vocals) started jamming in late 1993 after Chase responded to an ad in local music paper Xpress for a drummer into ‘The Beatles to Black Sabbath’. Influenced by the early 90s grunge sound, the band, originally known as Ash, debuted at the Charles Hotel supporting local metal legends iNFeCTeD. In 1995 the band released their first self-titled EP under the new name Thumb. The band toured to the UK in 1996 and released a second EP, Naked, upon their return. In 1998 their debut album, Nitros City was released. In 2001 they released album number two, Strange Kept Plain. The band had started playing acoustic shows alongside their heavier electric ones and this came to influence the song writing for album three. A single Like A Fire was released quietly in 2003 but the album did not follow and in 2005 after eleven years the band broke up with no farewell show. One reunion gig was played at the Hyde Park Hotel in 2008 for the RTRFM 30th anniversary and since then Thumb have been quiet. A third album was released online posthumously entitled Like A Fire and is an amalgamation of a number of recordings done in the period before the band broke up. Andrew Ewing went on to play in The Devil Rides Out and now plays guitar in Templelord.
