Amidst the aggressive sounds of trap and murkiness of emo rap, Triple G’s jazzy beats came as a breath of fresh air in the budding revival of Hong Kong hip hop. As early as 17, Triple G had been inspired by Taiwan’s Soft Lipa and started picking up on the art of diction and song-writing. In 2016, the rapper released his debut album 《淺藍色的號角》 (“The Pale Blue Horn”, translation writer’s own) with producer Canvas under hip hop novelty Wildstyle Records. The result is a melodic concoction of jazz, soul, and blues laced with delicate verses composed by the rapper himself. Since then, the pair’s chill aesthetic has risen to the fore and set off a new trajectory in Sinophone hip hop. Tender and at times sluggish, Triple G’s music is offset by juvenescent yearnings, tensions, and revelations often conveyed in his lyrics. In recent years, Triple G has performed in Hong Kong’s Clockenflap Festival, Beijing’s Strawberry Music Festival, as well as his own solo shows.
