2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 cup vegetable shortening 1 large egg Vegetable oil for frying Sesame seeds or muscovado sugar for topping (optional) 1. Combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a bowl. 2. Add shortening and mix until crumbly. 3. Beat in the egg. 4. Gradually add water to form a dough. 5. Knead until smooth. 6. Rest the dough for 30 minutes. 7. Divide into small balls. 8. Deep-fry until golden brown. 9. Drain excess oil. 10. Top with sesame seeds or muscovado sugar if desired.
