Fronted by songwriter Laura Hermiston, Twist came up in the Toronto music scene with a blend of 80s dream pop and low-fi indie. It started off as a side project between Laura and her other band’s producer Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck). They quickly caught the attention of major outlets like CBC, SPIN, and NYLON in 2015. Eager to translate her studio recordings to live performances, Laura enlisted high school best friend Matt Buckberrough. As a duo they worked out the songs for live performance and played mini-tours throughout Canada. They signed a deal with Buzz Records (Toronto) in 2016 and evolved into a four-piece, adding in Pat Grant and Kurt Marble. Together they released three records: Spectral (2016), Benefits (2017), Distancing (2018). They have toured the US and Canada extensively– playing festivals like SxSW and River & Sky with Chad VanGaalen, opening for Thee Oh Sees at Danforth Music Hall, Jessica Pratt, and Wreckless Eric. Twist’s sonic identity extends beyond concerts, lending its vibe to films, trailers, and TV shows. Most recently, Directors Zoe-Lister Jones and Daryl Wein placed “Venus” in their film and its trailer for “How It Ends” featuring Fred Armisen, Helen Hunt, Nick Kroll, and Olivia Wilde.
