A freeform DJ who has helmed some of LA’s most beloved parties, a remixer, a KCRW radio host, and a live music event producer, it took a global pandemic for Bosnian-born, LA-based Valida to finally carve out some time for her creative project. For most of 2020 Valida was cocooned in her Venice home studio completing Mixed Signals, a genre-hopping EP with a resonant and universal throughline: the desire to connect to her fellow Earthlings, via cosmic gateways, steady grooves and filtered synth tapestries. The firt single, Do It Again, is a spacewave dream – complete with sci-fi soundbytes and visuals from a childhood nostalgia trip; On Fire (Aug 24) is a daytime disco mood future classic; and title track Mixed Signals (Sept 21) is an homage to Valida’s dusty house music roots.
Valida began putting out remixes in 2010, premiering on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. That same year music director, Jason Bentley enlisted Valida’s “winning taste and instinct for the most exciting sounds around” (KCRW music blog) adding her to the station’s coveted DJ roster. Rooted in Bosnian sevdah and 80s pop, glazed in daytime disco, vaporwave, and deep house, she has been described as ‘one of LA’s most important nighttime personalities’ (LA.com) founding the legendary Proper Sundays at Star Shoes, the Wednesday night institution Desert Nights at the Standard Hollywood, and School Night at Bardot, which received Paper Magazine’s People’s Choice Award for “America’s Best Party.”
