Growing up in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Vanessa Stansfield didn’t imagine that she would play an instrument until she was a late teen. Originally, she was a ballet dancer and spent all her time in the dance studio. Then, after an accident that made a bad knee put her dancing days to an end, Vanessa started practicing the piano. She had always been surrounded by music and quickly knew that keep doing something creative and artistic could help to fill the void of not being able to dance anymore.
While still on crutches, she began to take piano lessons; “I guess I got a bit manic but in a good way – I just wanted to soak up as much knowledge as possible in a short time” she remembers. After getting to understand the instrument better, Vanessa started to make her own versions of her favorite artists like Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Carol King and others. Later on, some of her friends got to listen to her interpretations said that her piano playing was now at the same level as her dancing used to be (in other words, top class) and that she should think about publishing her cover versions to a wider audience.
After getting so much appreciation from people all over the world, Vanessa says that it feels like a gift to be able to give inspiration to others who are overcoming a difficult time; “while there's life there's hope”.
