Double J Radio called them “an Australian supergroup”. Victoria is a band of long-time friends: Cameron Emerson-Elliott (<a href="spotify:artist:51K48NCxjB11t9eqUWWoIq" data-name="Youth Group">Youth Group</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4BbHUsnvZ9fhaamH6pT26b" data-name="Community Radio">Community Radio</a>), Alison Galloway (<a href="spotify:artist:4wc3ixM7PquP8TPkBK3bXJ" data-name="Smudge">Smudge</a>), Patrick Matthews (<a href="spotify:artist:7vkiEK5D7Gf0z4M1Va0CXD" data-name="The Vines">The Vines</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:51K48NCxjB11t9eqUWWoIq" data-name="Youth Group">Youth Group</a>) and Max Doyle (<a href="spotify:artist:0YiZdYfQH1bJDQJsAB9oH5" data-name="Songs">Songs</a>).
The band’s trio of songwriters, Max, Cam, and Pat, draw inspiration from the Kinks (whose song inspired their name), 80s/90s era Flying Nun bands, and contemporary Australian groups like Dick Diver.
Victoria’s strength lies in their effortless ability to paint an evocative lyrical picture and set it to a memorable toe-tapping tune. “We felt that there was a bit of a dearth of indie rock bands making catchy songs with an overabundance of words at the moment,” says Matthews. “So, we thought we’d give it a go.”
Linking up with Wayne Connolly’s Scenic Drive Records during the pandemic, the band released their first song ‘Creative Frenzy’ on the label in March 2022. They have been steadily releasing more exciting singles – 'Favourite Teacher', 'Rushing Bull' – seeing their fair share of airwave and playlist action, and others such as ‘Justify', 'Edge of the World' and ‘Pompeii', which are now gathered together onto an album, 'Treats' (released Nov 2023 and re-released on vinyl on Impressed Recordings June 2024) that one could predict with a fair degree of certainty, will soon be described as a classic.
