Wax Roof, a seasoned musician, has been a steady pillar of the Oakland artist community for nearly a decade. His story as a producer begins at the end of a vision of a life as a player. At 19, after a childhood of playing guitar in surf and punk bands and then studying jazz and flamenco guitar, he was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition. After years searching both for a coping mechanism and a new way to engage with music, Wax Roof discovered sampling and production, and then hip hop. Ever the consummate artist, he dove headfirst into his newfound muse, learning first to chop beats, then to replay, and finally to produce full original compositions. In this personal tale of reeducation, relearning and rediscovery lies the inspiration for The Only Place I Know Visual Trilogy, the beating heart behind the lush world he’s constructed.
