Whipping Boy formed in Dublin in 1988, the band comprising Fearghal McKee (vocals), Paul Page (guitar), Myles McDonnell (bass, vocals), and Colm Hassett (drums). They recorded two EPs for London based independent label Cheree Records, before releasing their debut Submarine in 1992 on Liquid Records. In 1995 they released their second album, Heartworm on the major label Columbia Records.

The group split up in 1998 after being dropped by Columbia, leaving a third album unreleased. The self-titled album was eventually released in 2000 on their own Low Rent label.

Although Heartworm was not a commercial success at the time of its release, it is still cited as one of the finest Irish rock albums of all time. Increased interest in the band and the Heartworm album saw the record get a long overdue reissue on Needle Mythology Records, fashionably late for its 25th anniversary in 2021.
