Wolfsheim was a German synthpop duo from Hamburg, active between 1987 and 2005. The band consisted of Markus Reinhardt (music) and Peter Heppner (vocals and lyrics). Their sound blended elements of New Wave, synthpop, and darkwave, characterized by melancholic yet modernist themes. The band took its name from Meyer Wolfsheim, a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
Wolfsheim’s breakthrough came with their 1991 single “The Sparrows and the Nightingales,” followed by their debut album No Happy View (1992). They gained wider recognition with albums like Spectators (1999), which reached number two on the German charts, and Casting Shadows (2003), which debuted at number one. Notable hits include “Once in a Lifetime” and “Kein Zurück,” the latter becoming their most commercially successful single.
Despite their success, internal disputes led to the band’s inactivity after 2005. Legal conflicts between Reinhardt and Heppner over the band’s future effectively ended their collaboration. Wolfsheim remains influential in the synthpop and darkwave genres, remembered for their emotive music and distinctive style.
