Xiuhtezcatls highly anticipated album, TONATIUH [Toh-nah-tee-oo] (Xiuhtezcatl's middle name and the Nahuatl word for the sun), is the coming-of-age story of an artist deeply rooted in his culture, community and land. Xiuhtezcatl explores the complex duality of the cyclical trauma and healing in his lineage, resulting in an unapologetic celebration of culture despite the darkness he sees within himself and the world around him. Blending contemporary production with traditional Indigenous instrumentation and powerful lyrical storytelling, this genre-bending record pulls inspiration from Latin folk, rap, R&B, Indie and regional Mexican music. The track list includes contributions from Grammy-winning producers Trooko (Beyonce, Residente, Bad Bunny), Peruvian Quechua pop icon Renata Flores, Cold War Kids frontman Nathan Willet, Adrien Quesada of the Black Pumas, Reservation Dogs star Dallas Goldtooth and more.
Globally recognized for his lifelong work as an activist, Xiuhtezcatl rose to prominence in his childhood as a prolific voice of the environmental movement. This album marks a new chapter of artistic growth, solidifying Xiuhtezcatls art as an extension of his commitment to the communities he has fought to defend all of his life.
