Hailing from Berlin, Germany, 17 Hippies is a band with a unique acoustic and eclectic sound. Blending elements of Eastern and Southern European folk, Americana, infectious grooves, French chanson, and whatever else sparks their curiosity, their music is a journey across genres and cultures.
Their repertoire is as diverse as their influences, featuring original songs in German, English, French, and Hessian (a German dialect), alongside catchy instrumentals and traditional tunes from around the globe. Over the past 30 years, they have played more than 3,000 concerts across 27 countries, collaborating with artists like Les Hurlements d’Léo and Les Ogres de Barback from France, Germany’s Stoppok and Jakob Ilja, the USA’s Marc Ribot and JD Foster, the UK’s Johnny Kalsi, and Japan’s Issey Ogata.
17 Hippies have also made their mark in film music, composing, among others, the score for Andreas Dresen’s Halbe Treppe (“Grill Point”). They have released 21 albums on their own label, Hipster Records, as well as with Buda Musique in Paris.
As for the band’s name? Back in 1995, “17” simply meant “many,” and “hippies” stood for “different.” Today, the live band brings 10 musicians to the stage, continuing to captivate audiences with their vibrant and boundary-crossing sound.
