A Car That Swims

At first, Chris Maier’s A Car That Swims project seems like the polar opposite of the fanciful, instrumental orch-pop he makes under his own name. The four songs on the project’s debut EP Victory Lap are mostly made up of drum machines, synth, and Maier’s distant, submerged voice. It’s simple, sparse music, content to live in murk and mystery among echo and reverb. But listen to the way the chords jostle together and the effects ebb deep into the stereo field: you might hear hints of the Beatles and Beach Boys as refracted through latter-day mischief-makers like MGMT and Tame Impala, even as this music is far more low-tech and minimal than most of those artists. As much as this is a return to indie rock songcraft for the New York-based artist, who’s previously played with Cutouts, these are also some of the murkiest waters he’s waded in yet.
